If a company is to big to be allowed to die, then it's too big to let live.

Don't we have stuff for them to do? Why don't we just show up and say "Hey, you get the same pay and benefits - you're just going to be building trains instead of cars." (or whatever).

Then, as people move-on/retire/the economy recovers, we can make these endeavors more then just a way of keeping people form losing their homes.

That would make even more sense, hence is unlikely to happen.

Unless, of course, the uber-riche who would benefit from having the out of work auto workers working on the government dime want them to...
