Have you tried any aqua therapy,resistance running in the pool? I know it's not the same but it's low impact and will get you in a semblance of cardio shape so when you do start it's not such a long trip back.
I haven't done any work in the pool yet...I'm still stuck in physio with just the elastic bands and little rubber balls etc....*sigh* I should ask my physiotherapist if I could start some stuff in the water soon though!
