I've had my iPod replaced once already due to a hard drive malfunction. I am consiedering sending it off to get the click wheel fixed, but it would cost me $60 in shipping.
But your's is an older generation. If you know what the problem is, there may be a fix. Check out http://www.ipodlounge.com and a few of the other ipod sites to see if there is something you can do. They should have some information on how to use the diagnostics (which in my case confirmed my scrollwheel is a quarter dead)
Of course, judgning how much you use your ipod, it might be a good time to consider a Shuffle or one of the new color ones. I would love to sell you mine so I could get one that can hook up to the camera, but I don't think you want an ipod with "Gerry Straathof needs more Cowbell" etched on the back.
At any rate, I am paying for the shipping (only $45) which is considerably less than the $500 or so it would cost for a new one. I might consider the 1 GB iPod shuffle, but I like to play solitaire on long bus rides.
Applecare!
