More Song Lyrics
Mar. 12th, 2005 11:57 amI like songs that evoke a feeling of a particular time or place. These songs have an emotional component that always affects me. Sometimes deeply, if I'm in the right mood, sometimes only a twinge, when I hear them briefly in passing. These ten quotes are all from songs I like that have this ability to resonate.
Scarecrow on a wooden cross
Blackbird in the barn.
four hundred empty acres
that used to be my farm.
Grew up my like daddy did
My Grandpa cleared this land
when I was five I walked a fence
while Grandpa held my hand
Rain on the Scarecrow - John Mellencamp

Standing at the limit of an endless ocean,
stranded like a runaway lost at sea.
City on a rainy day down in the harbour,
watching as the grey clouds shadow the bay.
Looking everywhere cause I had to find you,
this is not the way that I remember here.
Anyone will tell you it's a prisoner island,
Hidden in the summer for a million years.

Out on the road today
I saw a Dead Head sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head
said don't look back you can never look back

Now she used to have a man,
and the man's name was Sam,
and he was the ultimate anti-hero.
And he used to drink
and he used to fight
and he used to beat her almost every night

Muriel plays piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would do a little number
And I sang with all my might
She said, "tell are you a Christian, child"
And I said, "Maam I am tonight"
Walking in Memphis - Marc Cohn

Well I'm standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
and such a fine sight to see
it's a girl my lord, in a flat bed Ford
Slowing down to take a look at me.

Date: 2005-03-13 10:58 am (UTC)John Mellencamp has a talent for evoking the best and worst of the American Heartland. This song always sounds like the modern equivalent of the American Gothic painting. It's a place that you wouldn't really want to go to unless you grew up there and therefore had a love for it due to familiarity and nostalgia.
Another melancholy song. It's lonely, but it has an underlying sense of hope. As for the final stanza (which I quoted), I agree with the sentiment - Religious services that concentrate on the joy and community are far more likely to make me reconsider my views than ones involving guilt and hellfire.
I have you and Ryan to thank for turning me on to this song. Thompson really pours it on towards the end, and I like that. Somehow, this song has become associated with my Father in my mind. It gets me weepy.
I listened to this song for years (and liked it) without really putting the lyrics together in my head. I still like it despite the Columbine images it invokes.

Date: 2005-03-13 11:04 am (UTC)Love this song. Ironically, I didn't used to be an Eagles fan. I kept hearing other bands covering their stuff though (The Travis Tritt version of Take It Easy is the one I got to know). The album Common Thread is a pretty good tribute to the Eagles for example. I finally broke down and bought their greatest hits and I've been hearing all these great old songs and loving them for the first time.
It's 1985 and Berke Breathed is god.

Trust you to get the song popularized in North America by a movie (though I imagine it was a hit in it's own right in Australia).
I'm going there someday.
Obviously, I like the original version of this song by Don Henley the best. The sad and lonely guitar at the beginning always gets me. It's been remade a couple of times. Sometimes they manage to "get it" (DJ Sammy), and sometimes they don't (The Ataris).

I've known women like this - the ones who've become trapped in abusive relationships. Not many thank ghod. Some wise up and get out, and others are trapped there still.
