LA and I decided that what we really wanted to do for a longish weekend, was go somewhere different for a foot race. Mostly she did all the planning and making suggestions, while I variously made suggestions, vetoed some choices, and forgot what she'd told me. We settled on San Francisco in May since there was going to be trail races on several weekends, which gave us some options.

"How about Muir Woods China Camp State Park Trail Race?"
"It's on Mother's Day, and I'd rather do the local mother's day race?"
"Bay to Breakers isn't a trail race, but it sounds fun."
"Wait...Bay to Breakers is that month? Let's do that!!!"
If you haven't followed that link above, Bay to Breakers is a footrace that crosses the San Francisco peninsula and has been run every year since 1912.  it typically get's 70-80 thousand participants and includes all things weird and wonderful about San Francisco.

We settled on that and made plans, which included dithering around quite a lot about what days to go, flights to take and where to stay.  Normally, I'd have picked a hotel around Union Square like I did last time.  LA though, wanted to stay somewhere a little less touristy.  She ended picking an awesome penthouse suite in Japantown that really was ideal.  It was roomy, gorgeous, nicely positioned in the city and cheaper than any decent hotel option we had.

A rare picture of SF that contains no iconic tourist attractions or fog

Getting to SF was fairly easy.  From Wal-tiki, we cabbed to YYC, then flew to YVR and then on to SFO.  In SFO we rented a car and went to Japantown and settled into our home for the next six nights.  Unfortunately, we had late flights (So late I worked over half a day before heading over to meet the others) so we were finally settled in around after midnight on Thursday morning and we hadn't had supper.  Taking a walk along Fillmore, we settled on JuBab restaurant and had a decent meal.  Then we turned in for the night.

Thursday was tourist day and started with us taking care of some chores (getting bus passes and making sure our phones worked on the local networks instead of letting Telus bone us).  Then it was a cable car down to the Ferry Building and a nice leisurely walk along the Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39.

Seals of approval
These layabouts were blocking a good part of Pier 39.  We even got to see a fight between two of them - one seal kept forcing another off of "his" platform.  The junior seal finally managed to deek him out by tricking him into thinking he'd swum to the other side of the platform and ended up winning.  Strong is good; Smart is better.

I just really like this fountain.
Finally, we hit the Ghiradelli Square for chocolate and found a maker's fare at the same time.  And then it was time to go back to the flat.  We were pretty bushed so instead of heading out somewhere nice for supper, we opted to get some takeout at Popeye's.  I've had better fast food fried chicken, but not often.

My one regret was that Musée Méchanique's copy of Robotron 2084 was broken.
