I went to Vancouver last week. Wednesday I had an early evening flight so I just took my luggage to work, ditched early and bussed out to the airport. The good news? It's rather easy to get from Research Park to the airport. The bus stop is right outside my office and it's a 45 minute ride with one easy transfer.
Security and the flight itself were uneventful. For me anyway. When I was exiting the plane I saw a Mountie in the plane bridge and another in the arrivals lounge. In the baggage area there where a couple of camera crews for assorted local news waiting. I missed the action so I'm not sure who was getting all the attention. A friend in law enforcement suggested that the only noteworthy prisoner going from Calgary to Vancouver was Jorge Sosa, a suspected war criminal!
My own excitement was nothing like that and was all due to piss poor programming on the part of my calendar app and Facebook.
I'm waiting for my bag to emerge when my phone lets me know that I have an appointment. I check it to find out that I have a mere 53 minutes to get to the Rio Theatre from Vancouver, and check in at my B&B. Crikey!
I thought I had two hours, plenty of time to take transit to Commercial Drive, check into my suite and head to the theatre. Since I was now on a major time deficit, I opted to take a cab instead. Nice, but expensive - $45 vs. the bus ticket I'd have used.
I get to the suite and meet the landlord, who was waiting for my arrival. She showed me the suite and my fears were confirmed - the suite was made for hobbits. Here I am standing (normally, not on tip toe) just inside the bedroom door.

I bashed my head once while my host was present. She was most apologetic. Anyway, it's not like they deliberately made the ceilings low, it's a character house and the height is the height. At least I could stand up straight in the rooms, if not the doorways.
My generous host gave me a quick ride to the Rio, saving me a few minutes at least and I got there five minutes before my deadline. That's when I discovered that the show wasn't starting in five minutes, it was starting in sixty-five minutes.
Here's the problem: Facebook events and the calendar app on my Android aren't timezone aware. I said the show started at 8 pm (which it did - Pacific Daylight Time), but my computers assumed it was 8pm Mountain Daylight Time, which is 7 pm PDT. Everything got shifted one hour earlier when I turned on my phone in the new time zone.
Sigh.
On the bright side I got decent seats and had lots of time to chat with
bognaustroglum and
somejauntypolka who joined me for the show. The show? The Critical Hit live Dungeons and Dragons show! I don't know that they'll go regularly, but they did enjoy it, as did I. If I lived in Van, I'd be a regular - it was a ridiculous amount of fun.
After the show,
somejauntypolka showed me the Stormcrow Tavern, one of Vancouver's two nerd bars. Then it was off to my suite. Thankfully the ceiling wasn't an issue when I was lying down.
