A lot of the shit stiking is how the organization deals with it. Does it actively remove such people from it's ranks (amature hockey, Cadet system) or does it try to cover up such incidents and move the people around (Catholic Church).
There are two issues here. The first is, as you say, how the SCA deals with this. it's highest punishment is banishment from the game. Hopefully this has been done, though banishment is kind of moot when it comes to someone who will be unable to attend an event for the rest of their life. This is literally the first I've heard of this, so I have no idea what's been done.
The second issue is that mundanes are predisposed towards thinking of oddball groups like the SCA as halfway to criminal already. A few years ago this happened. For some reason a lot of papers thought that his membership in the game was relevant (it wasn't). SCAdians are well aware of this general attitude and I've certainly noticed a tendency to down pedal the SCA when discussing the group with mundanes.
