The problem with being in very tight quarters with friends for several days is that it is a constant mental strain. I'm always watching myself, making sure I don't step on toes, both literal and figurative. My mental energy slowly wanes until I get snappy at people.
Now thankfully I haven't gotten anywhere near that level yet. Still, an ounce or prevention is worth a pound of cure. Today I took a "me day" so that I'll have enough left over for the jack-and-jill party tomorrow and the wedding on Sunday.
The day was mostly spent walking. I walked from Pleasantville (the neighborhood where I'm staying) to downtown St. John's. I walked up and down the touristy part of town (Water St. and Duckworth St.). Along the way I had a nice turkey sandwich at some cafe, hung around on a mall's patio overlooking the harbour while I wrote my last entry, and did some people watching.
stephtopia told me that Water St. had the world's most boring sex shop and she was right! Eventually I took a bus up to a mall and watched The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
The movie was light a popcorn fare and I enjoyed it.
I am sensing an unsettling trend though. Everything I am becomes fashionable 20 years too late for me to take advantage of it. Seriously, gingers became cool after I got out of school. Teenage nerds became hot when I hit late adulthood. Goofy guys with self-esteem problems (the usual Michael Cera, Jay Baruchel, Jesse Eisenberg roles) are becoming popular right now - just in time for me to be firmly in middle-age. I predict that bitter pudgy 40 year-olds will be the hot commodity in 2027.
It was a nice day. Not a great day, but it kept the specter of boredom away. I might do it again tomorrow' at least for the afternoon.
