Christmas is coming and I think it's going to be a fairly shitty one for yours truly. Part of this is the fact that I won't be spending it with my parents. I also think I've caught Kermit's cold. On the bright side, the cold has given me a case of the blahs rather than the heaving chest cold she had. I like to think it's because I exercise so I'm healthier. Or maybe I'm just lucky.

I was expecting a package to be delivered by UPS. They made their first attempt on Friday when I wasn't home, but they left a note: They would be back on Monday after 5 PM. With this reassurance, I left work early and got home at 4:55. I found a note on the door saying that they had come by and missed me and would make a third (and final) attempt on Tuesday. I immediately got on the phone with UPS to bitch about this (after all, I could have easily stayed at work for another hour if I had known they were going to shit-can my delivery). My first call, the automatic phone system put me on hold then hung up on me after a minute. My second call, I got a support drone, who basically said "delivery times are approximate, so it sucks to be you" - not the most sympathetic person I've ever talked to.

As an aside, when Ikea did this to me (they were supposed to deliver some shelves and a sofa, but forgot the sofa), they actually made a second attempt the same day so that I wouldn't have to take another half day off. UPS did not do this.

Talking to the drone, I got them to not deliver it a third time. Instead I'll be picking it up at their depot in the NE after work today. Cause a bus ride to pick up a twenty pound box is just the thing I need.

After the phone call I decided that what I really needed was some comfort food. Connie volunteered to keep me comfort (in retrospect, this was above and beyond the call of duty) and we went to Yamato for some sushi.

Now I normally get very good service at Yamato, but tonight was an exception. They had several very large parties, one of which was made of a bunch of frat boys. Now the frat boys were well behaved, but there were eight of them and they were all big eaters.

End result was that it took awhile for us to order and it took about an hour for us to get our order. We used one of those little sushi checklists to order and they had neglected to make anything on the reverse side of the list. At first we thought we were just getting our sushi in two removes. When it took another hour to get the second remove (which wasn't coming) we flagged down our server and asked for it to-go. She was more than a little surprised by our request. Then she was apologetic and comped us some green-tea ice cream. I discovered after I got home that they threw in some tobiko and shark-fin sushi along with our rolls.

Given I had already had one piece of shark-fin sushi, I've left the other for Connie, who will no-doubt throw it out. It had a... unique texture and taste that wasn't entirely unpleasant. One piece was plenty. It did taste better than it looked though - on the downside, it looked like snot.

The evening was not a total bust. The sushi (when we got it) was up to Yamato's high standards. I got to introduce Connie to the wonder that is unagi. This was also the longest one-on-one conversation I've had with Connie. As she is not currently on my potential-mate list, it was a nice non-threatening sort of practice date. She is a charming dinner companion, I wish I could say the same about myself.
