The CIBC Run For the Cure was today and having ran 5K in record time (for me - 32:55, giving a pace of 6:30. This was much better than my pace for the Macartney-Tetrault Relay). To do this I pretty much had to sprint the last 1/2K.

The secret of my success? Pick a woman with a fantastic backside who runs just a little bit faster than you. Then follow her. You can use this method too, just change genders to match your preference!

Afterwards, I discovered that Nellie's Break the Fast Cafe is very popular and had decidedly discriminatory hiring practices. My own waitress looked like a cross between Gwenyth Paltrow and Colleen.

Le Rowr Rowr.

But in all seriousness, the race is a great way to show support for victims of cancer. Hopefully the money raised will be used for research or something.

They (cancer fundraisers) had an earlier event last month. The Jail and Bail. This is where people get "arrested" and then have to phone up their friends and get them to donate money. They can go free when they reach their target amount.

Allan got jailed and ended up phoning me. This was the day after I got the news that my Mom has cancer (for the second time) so I was a pretty soft touch.

"I'll donate $X", I said, naming the most I could afford.
"Hey, that's great", he said taking my information so they can collect, "By the way, Nicole also got jailed - she'll be phoning you real soon."
"Why the hell didn't you tell me that right off the bat?"

Had I known, I would have given them each 1/2X, rather than the X+$10 I ended up giving. Oh well, it's for a good cause.

The Run For the Cure and the Jail and Bail both serve a very important purpose beyond their fundraising: They help remove the feeling of helplessness you get when you see your loved ones suffering and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. I can't wave my magic wand and cure my mom. The Djinni of the lamp isn't going to give me three wishes. But I can raise some money and surround myself with people who have learned how to cope.

It's not much, but it'll have to do.
