Scandalous!
Dec. 27th, 2008 07:35 pmBefore my Mom died, she took me aside one day to tell me dire news. It was a horrible scandal in the family and she hoped that I wouldn't be too upset when I found out what it was.
Naturally I was consumed by both dread and curiosity.
The scandal turned out to be that my Grandmother gave birth to my eldest Aunt five months after marrying my Grandfather.
*blink blink*
Needless to say I was underwhelmed by this revelation. The times, they change.
I related this story to my sister today. She had a chuckle (and of course knew all about the scandal, and had the same reaction that I did. She did tell me additional information that I didn't know. Turns out Granddad was a philanderer. Given that he died when I was a toddler, this had the emotional impact of - well, nothing. I was never close to any of my grandparents, so these scandals wouldn't have much affect on me even if it was truly scandalous things.
I did hear a funny funeral story though - and those are pretty rare.
Granddad died when I was a toddler as I mentioned. Grandma lasted another twenty years. When she did die, they took her to the funeral home in preparation for the funeral. The funeral home informs the family that, due to a clerical error, another woman was buried with my granddad. Allegedly my Father found this funny - "Even in the grave he managed to cheat" he said.
Turns out the clerical error really was just a clerical error though. The error was that they thought someone else was in the plot, but there wasn't really. Granddad's corpse was alone.
Or at least that's what they told us.
