Good, Bad, Ugly
Aug. 27th, 2008 06:26 pmOK, so the short version first.
Good: I won $10 on lotto today.
Bad: I have a 3rd degree separation of the left shoulder ACL. They say I'll be back to normal in 6-12 weeks.
Ugly: While getting checked out at the hospital, it was revealed that my blood pressure is high enough to raise eyebrows.
Decided to ride my bike to work today. I took a different route then normal because I had to go to the bank. I'm riding on the sidewalk because Northland drive is fairly busy and I didn't want to get sideswiped by a car. I'm going pretty fast because I have a clear line of sight going several blocks in front of me. No pedestrians in view and also nowhere for them to hide so I feel justified in being on the sidewalk.
I cross Northmount Drive, right by my bank, and at the last second I see that the ramp is two feet right of where I was aiming. I have almost no time to react, I can't possibly turn the bike fast enough to make it - I'm going to hit the curb. I try to bunny hop the bike but only get 1/3 of the way through the maneuver before impact,
Then I'm going head first over the handlebars. Time stretched out to a useless infinity and then I hit the pavement shoulder first. Ooof.
A couple cars stopped to see if I was Ok, but I wave them off due to a combination of denial and embarrassment. If I say I'm OK, then I must be OK, right? Nope. I sit there for a bit checking myself over. I'm not bleeding. I can move all my fingers and toes. I didn't hit my head or otherwise cause a potentially fatal core injury. The only thing wrong is my left arm, which hurts (but can move) and now has the strength of a kitten.
Bike seems OK though.
I walk the bike over to a rack and lock it up. I wander over to the bank to take care of business. As I wander in I flex my shoulder and feel something shift. [blink blink] I run my right hand along the top of my left shoulder and feel bones floating where bones should not be.
Ok. Time to go to the hospital. I call up
nosarious (who was seconds away from leaving at this point) and tell him to come and get me. Sadly I wasn't specific enough. He thought I just needed the spare set of keys, but I needed the whole car. He sprinted the two KM only to get to ride my bike back to fetch the car.
All things considered he made excellent time.
We finally both get into my car at 10:12. The only good thing to come of all this? It's very likely that if I didn't have my accident,
nosarious would have been in this accident.
So I wandered into emergency and ended up getting X-rays, a brace and advice from the Doctor. Standard treatment for this injury is to wait it out. So I get to wear a brace for the next two weeks, then go in for some physiotherapy. In the meantime, no archery, no running. And everything that requires two hands is now much more difficult. Typing this entry has taken over an hour (so far).
It doesn't even hurt that much (but then again, I popped an X-Advil as recommended by MH) - what I really need is a "stop feeling like a dumbass" pill.
And, oh yeah, blood pressure is too high. No doubt this has some subtle relationship with being 40 pounds overweight. My fat is not only making my the least attractive guy in any bar I go to - it's now actually affecting my health. Time to cut back the calories, since I can't really exercise in the short term.
Gratitude:

- I didn't get a brain injury.
- I didn't get a spinal injury.
- I'm not disfigured.

Date: 2008-08-28 02:49 am (UTC)Also the way you wrote your experience in your journal was kinda hilarious. I feel bad for laughing, but the movie I see in my head is slighty funny and slightly ouchy. I'm sure you're feeling the pain, but damn, you sure can write some funny stuff and that's a compliment. I have to work on writing humor. People think i'm funny, I think i'm a dork and an idiot, but maybe that's why i'm funny.

Date: 2008-08-29 07:14 am (UTC)I know how absolutely embarassing it is to go ass over tea kettle on your bike. I've done it lots. But avoided any major damage... I don't have as far to fall I guess.
My most embarassing was when I managed to give myself a face full of gravel and road burn along the main street of Cold Lake in front of everyone about an hour before my folks arrived on their first visit. (I missed a hop over a pot hole I had made every day the week before)
Heal quickly.
:)
