I was chatting politics with some coworkers at lunch and one fellow said that he went to school with Rob Anders. This gave me a wonderful opportunity to have a question I've always wondered at answered.

"So is Rob cynically Conservative because that's what it takes to get elected MP in Alberta or is he a true believer?"
"True believer, definitely."

I think I might have mentioned I went to university with him and Ezra too, we were all in the debate club. I think he's a true believer too - but sort of like Ezra, I don't think it's a deep/reasoned/passionate belief. They seem just too shallow to me.

It's been my experience that ideologues just don't have much room left in their personalities because their ideology takes up so much space.
