Lakritz on Harper

Via Grog's blog, I read this short little piece from Naomi Lakritz and her opinion of Stephen Harper.

I don't like the good old boys club mentality of the so-called Calgary School of right-wingers who rub elbows with Harper. There's only room for the rich and for big business in their world. Women, the poor, the disabled, low-income workers and seniors don't figure in.

As evilscientist said in Grog's comments section, "You know you're in trouble as a Conservative when the Herald starts printing stuff like that".

When I think of how I went to university - and was in the debate club, and knew the poli sci club guys too - and was semi-friendly with the 'Calgary School' including Anders... *shudder* I need to take a shower. I always knew I didn't like Ander's politics, for example, but I didn't know how much I didn't like him til these days when he's my frickin' MP.

A buddy of mine (who was in the Political Science Association - the Poly Sci student group you mention) said that Ezra Levant's nickname was The Friendly Fascist. Also said that he would make up statistics to win debates, knowing that people wouldn't have the real numbers handy to dispute them. That so many of the early Reform party "rat pack" are now MPs (including Rob Anders and Jason Kenney) is kind of frightening.

Aren't young, politically active students supposed to be for something other then the corporate oligarchy?

I mean, did they do the things they do because they're true believers in the neo-conservative way, or did they do it in a naked and cynical bid for political power? These aren't necessarily contradictory.
