Being smart is not as great a defense against being dumb as you might think.

Case 1: Thinking about the problem with transporting archery butts around (they're bulky as hell because they have to absorb multiple arrows) I thought "They should make inflatable targets". I almost immediately realised why that wasn't such a hot idea.

Case 2: My phone has been AWOL since Sunday night. Today, while trying to find it, I thought "Wouldn't it be great if cell phones has some way of indicating where they were - some kind of noise making capability."

*beat*

I then went and called my cell phone from my land line and heard it ringing in my bed room. It had fallen behind a bed leg.

Could an inflatable base/backing work if there was a barrier between target and the majority of the bulk?

The majority of the bulk was what I was hoping to eliminate. Basically you need a large mass to absorb the arrow. Ideally this will be dense enough to stop the arrow, but not so dense as to damage the arrow. Hay bails work and the ranges I've been at tend to use stacked cardboard or old phone books (you want the plain of the sheets to be parallel to the arrow path).

On sight we tend to use a wodden frame with multiple layers of cardboard or foam padding (like a camping ground sheet). We put it perpendicular to the arrow instead of parallel. This saves some space but it means that the target doesn't ast very long (by the end of the weekend it will have developed a very weak bullseye.

The archery center sells stuff like this, which works fine, but it takes up a lot of space in your trunk that could go towards camping gear.

If you didn't want to cart it out with you, you could probably inflate the target with shipper's foam (or whatever it's really called).

I can do you one better, when I misplaced my phone I thought "I'll just call it to find it!" and it took about 10 seconds for me to realize I don't have a land line.

Then my next thought was "I'll get my Dad to call!" as I began to search my pockets for my phone to call my father so he could call me so I could find my phone...

Hu-duh.
