Is Deckard, from Blade Runner a replicant? The director says yes, one of the writers (as well as the actor) says no. Who's got final say, when it's not clearly spelled out in the text?
It is different in Rowling's case, however, since the answer exists to explain why future movies can't include "the girl" in Dumbledore's past. If she's given final approval over such movie content, she gets to decide. If the movie came out with the girl and she okayed it, however, wouldn't she have missed her chance to declare something else as the facts?
Funny that Mr. Reynolds' view is a fairly typical one in fandom: we can pretend the story ended anywhere we want it to, even round about midway through the penultimate chapter.
Actually... while I sense that I would vehemently disagree with this guy Reynolds about homosexuality, I do agree with him about Text trumping Author.
Even if I might have liked to see gay characters out in HP, I think unless Rowling publishes it in a story in the HP universe, everything else she muses about in interviews is just theory, maybe good theory, but still just theory. Some of the things she muses about I like, some of them I disagree with - and I don't think I'm wrong until the Text says so :-)
It's Rowling's story, her character - if she says Dumbledore is gay, that's fine with me. It's hardly as if it makes that a central theme of the stories anyways.
The Peter() (http://americansfortruth.com/news/q-a-harry-potter-authors-gay-dumbledore-announcement-manipulates-children.html) was even more unhinged about it.
