I've seen this before too... what I can't figure out is why you'd swim to France just to swim back to the UK! ;p

My geeky theory: They have complex algorithms for creating routes between nodes. They've done this for both Europe and North America. Some wit decided to link a North American node to a European node. There being only the one link, the algorithm always goes through it. You could test this by linking (say) St. John's NL and Cork, Ireland. Logically, they are the nearest two cities from each continent, but I bet the route would be St. John's -> NY -> Le Havre -> Cork.

Also, I tried it with other continents and found it didn't work. Google hasn't mapped out the outer five continents yet. Or made links between them.
