I got bitched at for being negative (in a friends-locked post) about my recent experience at November Coronet in the Barony of Borealis. Let me point out here and now that my problems with the event were with only a few individuals not involved in putting on the event, as well as the workings of my fevered mind.

So what was good about the event?

Well the archery tournament was fun. Litton put on a decent event (and bakes a mean cookie) and the staff and cat of Pipestone Creek Archery seemed very friendly. I got to chat with various archers from all over Avacal who I don't see every week at the Montengarde practice. The group has a nice easy familiarity that I like.

Plus I got an iron-on Jolly Roger decal!

Elias Silver won the Masters category and Lady Elzbieta of Krakow won the Intermediate. Sadly I didn't catch the name of the gentle who won beginner.

The event itself was at a hall in NE Edmonton. The hall seemed nice. I initially thought it was way too small, but that was because I was completely unaware of the back area containing several staging areas, additional restrooms and the merchant/gaming area. Whoops.

The Coronet (Heavy Fighter) Tournament was pretty good. I was cheering for some of Montengarde's local boys - namely Khai and Sir Stein (aka [livejournal.com profile] bork107). Khai in particular was fighting really well. I remember back when he was new to the group and just getting started. He's come pretty far and is now a pretty valuable part of the group. I don't know him much, but [livejournal.com profile] wendy_licious speaks highly of him and that's good enough for me. Hell, she was willing to be Princess if he won - and he's good enough that it could have happened. It probably will someday.

Stein ended up winning - having watched him fight I can say that he did a helluva job. I also know that he and Gemma (aka [livejournal.com profile] justgemma17) will do a great job on the Principality throne.

I got to chat with plenty of people. That's always fun. Myfanwy and her new beau Willem were there - Willem (sp?) seems to be the first person who's joined the Barony from the Calgary Archery Club (rather then going the other way - joining the CAC after getting to know them through their facilities west of Calgary). I know Myfanwy's nice and It's always a pleasure talking to her. I was surprised by how much I also liked Willem. He seems like a good sort.

I didn't get much of a chance to talk to [livejournal.com profile] pandorasbox, which is twice now that I've only chatted with her in passing. grumble grumble. Her boy came with her and got a good hard dose of medieval weirdness.

The feast. It was awesome. The problem though is that in three days, you're hungry again. Beef, pork, lamb, moose, honey glazed veggies, salads with fruits and raisins, two kinds of soup, bread, cheese. No one went away hungry and everyone was well sated. There was even strudel for dessert. This was an ignore the WW points day. [livejournal.com profile] brotherselwynn, you did a great job.

Lots of people I knew got called up to court, including several who were presented with their AoAs. Many more still need to get their AoAs, so I'm going to redouble my efforts in recommending them.

Later I left. Got back to the hotel room, passed out and slept in until 10 AM. Had lunch with [livejournal.com profile] thebrucie and [livejournal.com profile] nosarious at DAD-E-Os. Drove back to Calgary without dying and managed to snag some Donut Mill on the way.

I'll have to go back the next time they have an event when it's not ass-biting cold.

Today I drove to the Olympic Oval and ran. I was going to run 8 circuits of 30 seconds running and 4.5 minutes walking. I felt so good I made it 9 circuits of 1 minute running and 4 minutes walking. Afterwards my leg still felt great.

I ran flat out for those little pieces - it felt so good to actually be doing something useful that I actually cried. I think it also shocked me out of the mood I've been in for the last few days. By the end I was both tired (because I've basically had no exercise for six weeks and everything has weakened) and also awash in endorphins.

I'm running again - all will be right in my world eventually if I can just keep running.
