Toon Town, Day 1
Mar. 24th, 2007 01:28 amI worked a half a day then beat a hasty retreat to Saskatoon. Picking up
hislittlekitty on the way out. We had an uneventful drive out. It takes about 6-7 hours to drive from Calgary to Saskatoon. Along the way, I observed a few odd things.
1) Between Drumheller and the Alberta/Saskatchewan border is something called Special Area #3. Anyone know what makes it so special? Looks like more prairie to me.
2) There was a nature reserve that had a number of posts with solar panels on the top. What were they? Were they measuring something (number of deer crossing the road perhaps)?
3) I was in a province full of Saskatchewan drivers! One nearly got creamed trying to pass my car. I'm driving down the highway and I see this guy coming up behind me at high speed (like 140 K). Clearly he's going to want to pass me. Too bad I think - there's oncoming traffic so he's stuck behind me. Nope, he pulls into the oncoming lane and passes me anyway, while a car is coming straight for him. I had to hit the breaks to give him room to pull over. He missed the other car by something like a car length - and at that speed a car length is less then a second leeway.
Why he did it I have no idea. Thought the guy two minutes later also passed me at about 140 (he waited for a safe time to do so). Maybe they were having some kind of race. First one to the grave wins!
We reached Saskatoon then immediately went south of the city to a military base where the archery competition was.
We met assorted Myrgan Wood archers and had a pretty good time. I myself was on fire shooting. I don't think I've ever shot this well at a tournament. I can't wait until tomorrow to see how well I did. Of the people who shot tonight I did the best though. Tomorrow is another crop of archers though and any of them could do better. We shall see though.
So coming out of archery, I was feeling pretty good. I was very confident that I would find a room at one of the local hotels.
As an aside, People were trying to scramble and find me some couch space. I did not want to do this because I was so confident in my hotel-finding karma.
We went back into town and I dropped K off at the house where her couch was. Then I went hunting for hotels.
Short version. There is several conventions in town as well as some kind of junior hockey tournament. There wasn't a room to be had in any of the central part of Saskatoon. I gave up after about six hotels. That's when I went to the boonies.
So here I am in the Westgate Inn, a motel on the western outskirts of town. It's pretty crappy, and the only room they had was a smoking room. It took about a half an hour for me to stop noticing the smell. Thankfully, it's no Rose Country Inn, and I'll have no trouble sleeping. In about five minutes. After I finish this post.
I have high hopes for tomorrow's event. Partly because it looks like a good event and a good feast. Plus it's Myrgan Wood, which is full of hotties.
