Stéphane Dion is leading the federal Liberals and Ed Stelmach might just take the provincial PC leadership (Dinning is currently in first place, but the party is so polarized right now that Ed might slip up the middle with second choice votes). Damn, Christmas really is the time of miracles!

Dion was my choice for leading the Libs, so this is good news for me. Surprising, because I thought it would be Ignatieff or Rae.

([livejournal.com profile] _grog_, I was going to make a point in this post but couldn't because of a glitch on the site. The point? That the CanWest poll is likely to change in the next few weeks for the simple reason that "would hypothetical candidate X, that you know nothing about, beat Harper in an election" is quite a bit different from "Would Stéphane Dion, whom we've just spent weeks educating you about, beat Harper in an election". Ask a vague question, get a vague answer. People will be more passionate about their answers now).

Dion is a strong federalist and supports Kyoto. Both of these will be very good for pushing the Liberals into a positive direction as well as differentiate them from the other parties in next years (likely) federal election.

As for Ed Stelmach, well I don't really know the guy. However the other choices were the red neck reactionary and the corporate tool so he can't do much worse. Also he might be the PC's Harry Strom, which would amuse me so long as these turkeys (or equivalent) didn't end up in power.

Since I live in the middle of no where rural Alberta, I am delighted Stelmach won. I think he'll bring a good balence of city and country ideas to the government.

Leadership Wins...

I'm quite pleased with both Dion and Stelmach's victories. It's nice to see something other than a right wing-nut win (especially here in Alberta).

Both men are relatively new to me. I've been listening to Dion on Cross Country Checkup this afternoon, and he at least sounds pretty reasonable.

As for Stelmach, I'm cautiously optimistic about him. It really depends on whether or not he keeps Morton at bay or lets Morton have real influence on government policy.

The poll itself struck as suspiciously timed - an attempt on the part of the CPoC to overshadow/minimalize whoever was to win this weekend. (The strong connections between CanWest and the Tories, as well as several amazingly blatant bits of propaganda this past year makes me very suspicious of anything they commission)
