Not the End of the World actually
Jun. 21st, 2004 03:35 pmSo the Conservatives are probably going to win unless they do something really stupid in the next week to piss off Ontario.
Is there winning really going to be that bad? I think that depends on whether they want to be reelected again in 2008. The party has to move to the center if they want to keep Ontario. That either means they have to soften their more ill-thought out policies, or lose the fight as the country goes back to a Liberal government.
That's been the habit for awhile now: The liberals are the "default" party and the Conservatives occasionally reach power when people get sufficiently disgusted with the Grits. The Torys are then in power for one or two terms depending on how long it takes them to piss everyone off again.
If Harper whips the social conservatives (the red-neck reactionaries) into submission, he has two terms for the fiscal conservatives (the pro-business wing) to do their job. If he doesn't, they only have one term.
On the gripping hand, a year ago I didn't think they had a snowball's chance in hell of uniting, so what do I know.

Re: End of the World Scenario
Date: 2004-06-22 10:12 am (UTC)What a short, nightmarish, scenario that would be.
As an aside, I've had this fantasy of running as the Bloc candidate for Calgary Nose Hill. I speak no French (that won't get me slapped) and the riding isn't in Quebec. The hard part would be getting the party to let me run under there banner. I'd treat it like being in the Rhinoceros Party, whereas they'd rather not have some western yahoo being a thorn in there side.
Oh well, I can still dream.
