jamesqGareth and I were at the pub with some SCAdians tonight. A latecomer ended up sitting with us whom I don't like at all. Strangely, his behavior wasn't nearly as dour and insulting as it normally is.
I began to think about this. Maybe I hadn't given him a chance - certainly I don't like it when I'm on the other side of a bad first impression. Hell maybe I'm just hyper critical sometimes. I resolved to start over, and so I made a first, tentative, attempt at a civil conversation with the guy.
Jerk.
Later in the car ride home with Gareth we talked about it. Gareth, I'm happy to say, has pretty much the same impression of the guy I do. This is a nice confirmation as Gareth is generally less neurotic than I am (in much the same way that a golf ball is generally less massive than Volkswagen). Sometimes I'm not sure if my impressions are being unduly influenced by personal bias. This is especially true when everyone else seems to like the person I can't stand (as in this case). I start wondering if they're right and I'm wrong. On these occasions it's always nice to hear someone else agree with me.
It's happened before. Carmen was in town many years ago, just prior to my exile. A bunch of us went to the Cat n' Fiddle for an afternoon of socializing. Fleabite was there and being his usual insulting self, and as usual nobody seemed to care that I was taking his shit and abuse. Afterwards, Carmen and I were driving back to my place.
It's nice to not be completely alone in these observations.

"I'm drunk!", he said, "That's why I'm at the peon end of the table."
