My hamstring obviously clobbered this trip. Looking back on Saturday, I think I know when I fucked up my leg. It was when I got on the 601 bus going to South Delta. The bus was an express bus and was built like a tour bus rather then a standard city transit bus. That means it had high-backed seats and the seats themselves where raised up from the aisle. The aisle made a sort of valley down the middle of the bus.

When I got on the bus I went to a nice empty seat at the back and managed to catch my left foot on the ledge as I went to sit down. Tripping now I wrenched my leg over the ledge to keep from falling into the seat. I was successful, but I think this is where I pulled my hamstring.

Exiting the bus to transfer to the 630 Tsawwassen bus, I had to stand to the ferry terminal. Then at the ferry terminal I was rushing to get my ticket. I didn't notice anything odd about my leg at this point (it might have been a little stiff and sore, but I often have little aches in my legs due to all the jogging/walking I do - I generally just ignore it). Then I sat on the ferry for an hour and a half watching Jeremiah. I got on the 70x bus from Schwartz Bay to downtown Victoria and that was when I first noticed how sore it really was. It didn't affect my mobility yet though.

Sunday night and Saturday morning you already know about.

Hobbling around after the race I didn't run I got a lot of comments. One person gave me an excellent bit of advice: Don't tell people you missed the race because you screwed up your leg the day before - tell them you screwed up your leg competing in the race itself. In fact, you should tell them you sprained it in your effort to cross the finish line. And that's what I did from them on to anyone who asked.

Don't worry, I won't lie to my friends - they get to know that I pulled my hamstring tripping on a bus. Only strangers get the good story.

My yogurtheadedness continues this trip. I lost my hat on either the #100 bus coming from the airport or in the airport itself. I'm hoping for the latter because it means I have a chance of retrieving it before I return. I also bought a ticket for the race breakfast. Looking for it (while limping) at the Empress hotel I finally flagged down a bellhop, who looked at my ticket and pointed out that it was for Saturday not Sunday. D'Oh!

My mobility was severely restricted on the way back to Vancouver. So mush so that I was walking about as fast as my dear departed Dad did after his stroke. How he managed for eight years I'll never know. Eight hours was enough to get me severely cranky.

It was also expensive because I took a cab to and from the ferry terminal. $60 in Victoria and $70 in Vancouver. Kee-Rist I could have rented a car for less.

I didn't want to let my leg get in my way of a good time though so the gang ([livejournal.com profile] somejauntypolka, [livejournal.com profile] chris9871, [livejournal.com profile] whiggy_one and [livejournal.com profile] bognaustroglum) and I went out to Ma's Clubhouse for dinner. It was good but I felt sick after-wards, possibly due to the combination of Advil and a Pina Colada. Note to self, do not drink booze when you already have mobility issues. I didn't puke, but I did take a pot to bed with me just in case. I also got hot and cold flashes so it was not a pleasant night. Waking up in the middle night I felt a lot better.

Monday was spent hanging around and also window shopping along 4th. All I got was a few candy bars and a bag of "Aged Cheddar and Red Onion Chutney" potato chips. The chips tasted vaguely of a mix of cheddar and sour cream and onion, so they were ok, but I expected more. We went to Frenchy's for Lupper and had poutine and smoked meat sandwiches. It was good. As the day progressed I went from about 40% mobility to 20%. Still better then Sunday where I couldn't get about 20%.

Today seems better. It'll still be a few weeks before I can run again, but I'm getting to the point where I can function albeit in slow motion.

All in all it's been a pretty shitty vacation. The company of my friends being the positive exception to this. Thank heavens for friends.
