A pell is a roughly adult-sized dummy (on a base/stand), so I assume pell work would be practising hitting the dummy, with footwork and stuff thrown in.
It's also an ideal way to work out shots/combinations/movement/range without having to worry about mistakes/miscalculations resulting in injuring your opponent or you making yourself open for getting pummelled : ) It can't replace fighting real opponents IMHO but it is an excellent training tool for working on specific skills. And since you aren't being hit back it's training you can do while recovering from some injuries - ask me how I know ; )
LOL! Well as I am recovering from a fractured rib right now - hence the no fighting last weekend - pell is the only training I am allowed to do. Can't risk getting hit and the pell never hits back.
