I listened to a talk recently by Gwynne Dyer.
http://www.gwynnedyer.net/

A couple of points he mentioned stuck with me.
-Many countries are worried about whether they are dealing with a rogue superpower.
-There is much behind the scenes diplomatic work to maintain a wait-and-see posture. But how long can they wait?
-The U.S.A. has dealt with deficit trade balances and deficit budgets. However, there are now dealing with both at the same time.
-It is in nobody's interest to see the U.S. dollar crash. But what is keeping it up?

In other news I see that Rumsfeld continues to want to shrink the U.S. military while continuing to spend money on multi-billion dollar weapons systems that don't work. Third world countries continue to offer cheap labour. India is now offering cheap professional labour in many fields.

http://www.fourthturning.com/ offers an interesting view of the emotional state of the states. Predicted in the nineties.

I hope to live long enough to see whether the Americans (and also the rest of the world) manange pull through the crisis.
