Given that you are renting part of the house out, you might be able to call that repair (at least partially) a business expense - thereby taking it out of pre-tax rather than after-tax income.

Ah, but then he would have to claim the rent as income... and pay tax on it. I highly suspect this is more of an "under-the-table" kind of thing...

What anonymous said. Besides which, the first repair was $90 and the second repair was $45, so it's not really worth my time.

Last time it was the element, this time it was an unrelated wire. Hopefully it'll work OK from now on.
