My first full day of vacation started somewhat later than I had originally planned. This was due to beer drinking a philosophy meeting the night before. Still, I was by myself and had no set schedule aside from wanting to get onto the Avacal/Tir Righ War site (Trophy Mountain Buffalo Ranch) while I still had daylight.

I finished packing the car with all the stuff I'd need for the next ten days and had a fairly uneventful ten-hour drive to the site. When I got there I saw that it had been raining off-and-on all day and it decided to pour down on me as soon as I started to pitch my tent. It stopped about ten minutes after I finished the job, which suggests some kind of minor karmic retribution.

Wandering around I found a handful of friends and a slightly larger number of acquaintances. Surrounding them was a huge number of strangers. I don't mix well with strangers due to my introverted nature, so I found myself at odd ends for large chunks of the event. I didn't want to monopolize the time of the people I did know, so mostly I wandered. Also went to bed relatively early for an SCA event both nights that I was there.

I did shoot reasonably well in the archery tournament Saturday. Mostly I did average on the targets, but there was a "luck shoot" target that I actually got very very lucky on. This made me a contender. Sadly I was unlucky on another target - one arrow lost me three points and gave Baron James of Lions Gate three points. How critical was that one arrow? Here's the final tally for the top three:

  2. Baron James
  3. Me
Drat says I.

Later I got to shoot with SB and SE, One of whom is a lovely lady of Montengarde and the other is a lovely lady who should be in Montengarde.

The war was to end on Monday, but I didn't realize that when I was planning this vacation some months ago, so I had to leave Sunday afternoon. I said my goodbyes and made my way down to Vancouver, the Soggy City by the Sea.

Overall A/T War was a huge fizzle for me. I didn't do much, didn't socialize much, didn't sleep well and the weather was largely pissy while I was there (though it wasn't as bad as Silverwolf). Rumour has it that the site owners did a half-assed job preparing for us and frankly we were ankle-deep in fresh, wet buffalo shit everywhere we went. All-in-all I'd have been a lot happier simply flying straight to Las Vegas and back to Vancouver and skipping this event entirely. Oh well, it wasn't a bad time, it just wasn't a good time, and since it necessitated me driving for a grand total of 26 hours, I'd rather my time was well spent.

There's rumours that the organizers are equally unhappy with the site and are looking for a location near Revelstoke. This is a slightly longer drive for Edmonton, a shorter drive for Calgary and basically no difference for Vancouver. I'll give it another go if rumour turns into reality.
