As you may have gleaned from entries in my personal blog, My friend Lord Anger is back in Cowtown. This means gaming of the highest calibre. So what does he suggest, given the opportunity to game with a big group of people he hasn't gamed with in about a zillion years? - An all-dwarf D&D3 campaign. My knee jerk reaction to that was "ugh, that doesn't sound fun at all." Later I warmed to the idea, mostly because it's Brian, and he has a well-earned reputation for being able to make the phone book into an interesting RPG.

Not only does he get me into this, and I think Dwarves are duller than dirt. He also gets [livejournal.com profile] garething into it - and Gareth thinks D20 is a crime against humanity. To top it off, he manages to convince Bruce "Role-playing Games Ruined My Life" Walters into picking up the dice again. Lisa rounded out the group of four, and Ian may make it five if he actually shows up (I remain skeptical).

It was well worth it. We had the first session last Sunday and a great time was had by all. We established some of the history for the campaign (a combination of Forgotten realms and stuff From Brian's evil little mind) and the characters all met in a tavern. We start the actual adventuring next week. In all, there was no combat or dice rolling, always a good thing with our bunch.

My character?

Solokai Thunder-kin, Aka Solokai of Clan Stone Fist, of the city of Adbar, son of Haodin.

Solokai is a sorcerer, which allows me to ignore everything I've ever hated about the D&D magic system.

So what does "Thunder-kin" mean? Well in Brian's Forgotten Realms history, a quest for Moradin (chief mucky-muck of the Dwarf gods) in the recent past has rejuvenated the Dwarvish people. The birth rate is up and includes numerous cases of twins, which was almost unheard of before. "Thunder children" is the term for this generation (not just the twins). When there were twins, one was usually born with the magical ability of a sorcerer (which manifested later). Dwarven society is still coping with this and doesn't really know what to do with these people. Naturally, Solokai is one of them. When out and about amongst the non-dwarves, this is the nickname he uses.

So he has a twin brother, elder by a few minutes, named Haod (pronounced hay-odd). Haod is a lawful-neutral jerk (whereas Solokai is neutral-good). Not really an evil twin per se - bullying bureaucratic pain-in-the-ass twin would be more accurate.

Stats, for those of you who give a rat's ass:

Solokai; Dwarf; 3rd level Sorceror; Str-10 Dex-13 Con-18 Int-12 Wis-10 Cha-16.

No, I'm not going to list all of his spells, feats, skills, equipment, 'cause it's just not that important.

He's just starting out, having passed (technically) his rune-crafting apprenticeship. His friends include Shaudar the cleric (Gareth) and Bregar the sapper (Brian's NPC).

And he finds himself accompanying two outcasts, Migan the shield maiden (Lisa) and Björn the caver (Bruce) back to their home turf, or possibly on a quest to redeem the Axe Guard clan...
