I don't have a single best friend. I do have a class of friends who qualify for this - a handful of people I am proud and grateful to know. I couldn't possibly pick one over the other as the true best best friend.

So I'll just describe [livejournal.com profile] garething.

He's one of my oldest friends and he's had my back for a long long time. We met and bonded because of a fellow named Kirk (may he rest in peace). Kirk was occasionally brilliant (he introduced us to each other) and occasionally a dumbass (he gave away our shared room at an SF convention to a bunch of strangers who weren't SF fans).

G and I have hung around with each for so long that it sometimes seems like we can read each others' minds. Along with [livejournal.com profile] thebrucie we call it "the Shoggoth".

G is one of the most centered people I know. He also has an ability to simply put his mind to a task and do it. In the last few years I've struggled to get started on writing a few short stories. He's published a novel. He's also gotten married, become a journeyman Electrician and helped raise a daughter. Where he finds the time or energy I have no idea.

Despite all that, he's super laid back. I think I've seen him angry twice - in over twenty years. He's probably seen me angry so many times he's lost count.

Whether we see each other daily, or go for months (as we did when he lived in Vancouver) without speaking with each other, we always fall back into an easy familiarity that characterizes this class of friendship.

Also, if I needed someone to help me move a body, I'd call him.

I'm not sure what I ever did to deserve his friendship. I only know I'm fortunate to have it.

If you have it.... you deserve it. Thats the thing with best freinds. They give you what you deserve and need even when you think you don't deserve or need it.

I love the friend qualification of being able to move the body.
