We lost the ever fabulous [livejournal.com profile] minyata and [livejournal.com profile] cat_cetera from our trip to Estrella (unless they decide to fly down or something - HINT HINT).

This also means we've lost the carrying capacity of their vehicle. This is not as big a loss as them, but it's still leaving us to scramble. We have a few options, the one we pick largely decided by how tightly we can pack two vehicles.

Plan A: Limit what we take to our garb, civies and archery gear. There will be no armour (not that we were taking it anyway this time around) and no pavilions. Go into Basspro in Phoenix and pick up dome tents, cots and sleeping bags. Hit Walmart (shudder) to pick up cheap, easy to abandon, supplies like coolers, pillows and camp chairs.

When the event is over, store the camping gear in Phoenix for subsequent trips.

This has the advantage of giving us a local cache or supplies for future trips that we can use, but will require some juggling. We'll also probably have at least one extra car trip into Phoenix on the first day and last day of the event to shuttle our gear.

I'm not too upset about the cost as I look at it as an investment.

Plan B: If we find we have additional room in the vehicles, we can try to bring more of the camp gear down (my big-ass tent for example). This seems unlikely as we need to leave room for the stuff we buy and want to return to Canada.

Plan C: Put the fugly box onto my car. Use it to carry gear (and also poles). The disadvantage here is that after listening to the box whistling above my head for thirty hours, I'll probably be very stabby.

Plan D: Get a better cargo box for the car. This has the advantage that it was on my list of things to do eventually anyway. Costco appears to have a couple good ones, but I need to go up to the store and look at their technical specifications.

Plan E: I borrow someone's truck. I know a couple of likely candidates (you know who you are), but it's 5000 km, and that's a lot of miles to put on a borrowed vehicle. Also, it's iffy taking a vehicle across the border.

Anyway, Plan A is what we're pursuing now. It has the advantage of being perfectly doable.

Every year I toy with storing gear in Phoenix to make it easier the year after - do you have a storage thinger in mind? I am curious : )

Also you might mention to minyata and cat_cetera that flights are VERY cheap right now - I booked us this week and it is $680 toltal for the pair of us roundtrip

We never miss it if we can! It is FUN! Di and Korr are going too. Not sure who else. Are you all camping with An Tir? Be sure to get into the land allocation to make things easier.

YAY for Avacalians amok at Estrella!

Much havoc shall be caused...unfortunately I wont be able to be a bad bad man on the field this year :( I'll just have to make up for it on the archery line.

Buy a cheap truck instead of borrowing/renting

If that is the case I can find one of the ones I sent you a while ago. I recently saw it go down to $1000 I think

Ya, the cheap truck option (or the GM Option as I prefer since it's such a gamble) is there but it's definitely the hardest to justify.

I also can get some garage space for storage at my folks place in Phoenix. That said, I think I am now personally pretty commited to not going this year. I would rather save my $$ and vacation days for KA&S, AT War and maybe a trip home this summer. Next year!

Did a quick bit of digging, there's a chance I could get us a rental minivan at our corporate rate of around $450 a week. Not a great option, but still an option.

Rent an RV. We had tons of space.
We slept 3 people, stored our stuff and stuff for 6 other people in ours. We had room to bring stuff back too.

We get unlimited mileage on all rentals less than a month. If it's an option we truly consider the big questions will be am I the only allowed driver and can we bring it across the border.

You could. But you won't get any warranty, etc. on a truck at that price so you might be taking a big risk on it breaking down.
The RV also has the advantage of giving you somewhere to sleep while you travel.
