I was wearing a SCA tee shirt today. It read:
SCA
Been there
done that
got the T-shirt
XL
Cryptic, which led to questions. First question, what's "SCA" mean. I explained and felt faintly ridiculous doing so. It makes more sense to be into medieval recreation in North America, were we never actually had a middle ages.

This led to my explaining that my persona was 13th century Scots/French - to F, my Scottish tour guide. Not sure how she took me play-acting one of her ancestors. I hope it didn't come off as patronizing.

I did get to show off a picture of me in my kilt. On the good side, It showed that I look pretty good in a kilt. On the bad side, it was my Black Watch kilt. The Black Watch was the unit formed to hunt down Jacobites. Not the thing you want to be showing to a Scottish Nationalist.

Oh, and the Black Watch, being formed in 1725, is not in period.

Yeah, they might think it's weird; but no weirder then the Cowboys and Indians clubs they have there. When I was in York I stumbled across a group of very drunk guys all dressed as Cowboys and Indians - the sober people in the group among them informed me (in a SCAdian type way of talking down to the mundanes) that they were part of a wild west recreation group. Then I said... "oh.... o.... k...."
upon recognizing my accent he started asking me stuff about North America and if I'd petted a bear (he was obsessed with the idea of seeing bears and maybe touching one... despite my "are you on glue" type warning). It was a very odd experience.
