There was a wedding this weekend. I was tapped to be best man, for which I was (and am) deeply honored.

This is the third time I've been someone's best man and I have to say that so far the job requirements have been pretty lax. For example, I've yet to hire strippers.

I ended up with a very nice suite in Canmore for Friday and Saturday night. We used it as the preparation area for the groomsmen Saturday morning. There were extensive photographs taken and we also took the opportunity to take some pre and post-rapture photos of us in our tuxes. Incidentally I look pretty good in a tux - not as good as the non-obese in the party (i.e. everyone else), but still better than normal.

Photos were taken. Lots and lots of photos. Some around our hotels, some up at the Grassi reservoir, and some (post-ceremony) around the Nordic Center.

Just prior to the ceremony I gave my camera to WJ. She took a handful of photos of the ceremony, then proceeded to take many more photos of cleavage, ass, tattoos and random unidentifiable expanses of flesh during the reception.

Given I know both the bride and groom well enough to have been on either side of the bridal party, there was some loose talk that I officiate the wedding. In their wisdom, the Alberta government has decided that any rule where the like of me can be marrying people is a bad rule.

This turned out to be a very good thing because Nomi Whalen did a much better job than I could ever dream of doing. Nomi knows just how to run a ceremony without appearing bossy but at the same time giving everyone sufficient direction that they're not lost. After all, she does this a lot more than any of her clients. At least I hope so.

The ceremony hit a nice balance between fun and gravitas and was just the right length. The bride and groom had a nice unity ceremony towards the end involving a bottle of port and a box custom made by the lead bridesdude. Basically they boxed up the port and they'll be opening it up in the future (tenth year anniversary? fifteenth?) to enjoy.

Afterward there was a delicious meal, assorted traditional wedding reception things (first dance, cutting the cake, etc). For me the fun part was being dogsbody to the groom and seeing a lot of old friends I rarely get a chance to see. As with SCA events, you never get to see enough of them, alas.

Aside from a triggering incident I had a pretty good time. I look forward to the Vegas theme wedding in a few years.
