Today was the day that I resolved to drive to Vancouver. And I did it. The first half was pretty good, with one tiny little glitch. As I was driving towards the road out of Cowtown, the car accelerated sufficiently to cause the garage door remote to fly out of it's little holding spot. And now I can't find it. The car was sealed, it fell to the floor of the car, but repeated searches of the car have revealed nothing. It's like it went momentarily insubstantial and fell through the car. I'll have to find it before I get back, or parking the car in the garage will prove difficult.

My day fell into three parts, the trip from Calgary to Kamloops, a short visit with Troy and finally the trip from Kamloops to Vancouver.

The trip to Kamloops was pretty uneventful - I basically listened to music and 1/4 of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.

Visiting Troy was the highlight of the day - him and Jo have bought a nice little house in Kamloops and they're fixing it up. I also found out that Troy has job prospects in the Insurance business. Something that he'd rather do then plumbing. Since the last time I saw Troy he was taking Eco-Terrorism at MRC, the whole plumbing thing came out of left field. We traded stories about what everyone in the extended circle was up to, and where we didn't know what was going on, we made shit up.

Troy - I just want to repeat the point I made in person: You need to come out for a week to Calgary for the expressed purpose of visiting your old friends.

When I left, it was already pitch black out. However, it wasn't even six o'clock yet, so I resolved to drive to Vancouver instead of bedding down in small-town-BC. In retrospect, that might have been the wiser choice.

I manage to find my way onto the highway from the far-end of Kamloops. The signs said that the roads were clear, but that there was a chance of dense fog. As I drove up the Coquihalla, things started to get fuzzy. I spritzed the windshield, but it just got worse. I was starting to think that there was some kind of gunk in my winshield washer reservoir, when it suddenly dawned on me - this must be what they meant when they said dense fog. Apparently it's on highway 5, and also in my brain.

It got worse and worse, until I was driving at half the speed limit, not being able to see more than twenty feet in front of the car, and that only because the car ahead of me had headlights. I decided to follow him, which would have been ironic as hell if we both went over a cliff. I had to deal with that for about a half-hour.

Afterwards, the fog cleared, at least for a while and I made up some of the lost time. Unfortunately, Vancouver was also fogged in, though not nearly as bad. I also discovered that Vancouver drivers are fearless - doing stunts I wouldn't even attempt.

Eventually I got to the hotel and parked the car, where I just might leave it until I go back. I've had my fill of driving for the time being. I left Cowtown at 9 AM and arrived in Vancouver at 9 PM. I also spent an hour in Banff and an hour with Troy, so between that and the time zone change, an elapsed time of 11 hours.

My back now consists of iron rods. Ugh.
