Twenty-one Steps and Five Kilometres
Oct. 3rd, 2005 07:06 amFriday and Saturday I helped
hadriel,
garthing and
stephtopia move their crap. Downside: They each moved into apartments that were up three flights of stairs. Twenty-one steps to be precise - you get to know these things after carrying an endless stream of boxes and furniture up them.
Upsides: G & S are now living together and H and K are also living together. In the same apartment complex, but in different buildings. It's closer to K's elementary school and also closer to my house, Pepperland. Everyone's health should also improve owing to their leaving the mold and spore infested duplex they used to inhabit. In fairness, the hygiene of their old place wasn't a result of shoddy care on their part - it was a result of the landlord's refusal to actually do anything about cleaning up after assorted floods.
K will be happy. There are actual kids to play with in her building. It has a definite rugrat infestation. Meanwhile in S and G's building, the infestation is not children, it's Mormons! Something that amuses me greatly.
The apartments are nice, but I'll let the actual residents describe them in their own blogs.
Saturday night we retired to Pepperland, where D cooked us a repeat of the last Beltaine feast. I need to invite this woman over more!
So what do I do on the last day of my weekend, after helping my friends move a metric ass-load of stuff? I went on the CIBC Run For the Cure. I was late getting out of the house (I was cleaning my race strip, which still wasn't dry by the time I left). I opted to wear my breakaway pants, the race t-shirt and a sweater instead. This worked out nicely. I also missed my train, so I ended up cabbing down to Southcentre mall. Expensive, but worth it. Got to the race with time to spare and got a nice position at the starting gate. Apparently, there were12000 14000 of us.
The race started precisely at 10 AM and I finished (according to my cell phone) at 10:27. There's no second hand on my cell phone so it could have been anywhere between 10:27:00 and 10:27:59. Whether it was a 27 or 28 minute elapsed time doesn't' matter. What matters is that my pace is finally below 6 minutes/KM! This was a personal best for a 5K and was better than my previous personal best by 5 minutes.
There was a woman who paced me for the last half of the race. Without her I probably would have slowed down. She chatted with me a bit and her presence inspired me. After the race we high-fived.
After the race I thought I'd drop by
hislittlekitty's work and visit her. But the place is closed on Sundays. Oh well, better luck next time.

As Archchancellor of the Unseen University, you are the most sensiblely pig-headed wizard on campus. And what is perhaps more remarkable than being able to summon fireballs whenever you want them, you're even usually right. You have Rincewind's luck without any of his pathetic everyman-ness. After all, you *are* Archchancellor. |
