As I mentioned earlier, I went to Wednesday's fireworks. It'll be my only chance as the next set of fireworks are on the same day as the wedding.

At first, [livejournal.com profile] chris9871, [livejournal.com profile] bognaustroglum, [livejournal.com profile] pale_pink and I all went to Sammy J. Peppers restaurant on Granville Island. They make a fairly good jambalaya and I had a hankering for it. The service was at times good and at times less then good. The server seemed to be a bit of a ditz, but the manager seemed to be aware of this and so was running interference. At one point [livejournal.com profile] chris9871's meal was two minutes late, so he comped it! Nice.

Afterwards, I was the only one who wanted to brave the crowds and see the fireworks, so I sent [livejournal.com profile] chris9871 back with my car and I said I'd walk back home.

Well I took the wee ferry across the water and then walked to the corner of Denman and Davie, which seemed to be the focal point of the fireworks. Speakers were set up and the fireworks barge was nearest to that point of land. It was also sort of aimed at the intersection so that I ended up in the sweet spot for the fireworks. Of course, lots and lots of other people were aware of this too, so the crowds were as thick as I've ever seen them - and this is the fifth year I've been to the fireworks.

The Czech Republic was Wednesday's competitor and they did a half-hour medley of swing and big band classics, starting with Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing) by Benny Goodman. They also included some Gershwin and Mancini. It was a lot of fun and very toe tapping. It was also interesting to finally see that the fireworks are supposed to be in time with the music.

As usual it ended too soon. However, when you're close to the epicenter, they actually inform you of this. I got a good start walking back to twentieth.

Along the way, I began my long race with the leggy blonde. She was wearing a pack and was power walking. Now if I walked as fast as I could, I'd just keep up with her. And for most of the Burrard Bridge, I did. Afterward, she went one way and I went another. But then along Broadway I encountered her again. We again paced each other for the next few K until she crossed the street at McDonald. We then continued to keep pace with each other (albiet on opposite sides of the road) until I got to Calhouns for a much deserved slice of Lemon Cheesecake. Sadly I did not see the legy blonde again, else I'd have declared her the winner. She was just a hair faster then me, gaining about one pace every block or so. That I encountered her twice is only because I picked a faster route then she did.

After Calhouns I again started walking (or by this point, moseying) and encountered two girls in a SUV who asked me how to get to the Trans Canada Highway. I gave them directions that I hope were good. At the very least they would have gotten the two ladies closer to their goal.

As mentioned previously, I collapsed when I reached my bed. No massage yet, but it's coming, oh yes, it's coming soon.
