This was originally going to be a response to [livejournal.com profile] ersatz_marduk's post here, but it only tangentially addresses his topic so I'm making it it's own post. Isn't it special.

I've gotten past the point where people ask me why I jog (they're starting to see the why of it). Now I get raised eyebrows when I mention that I run first thing in the morning.

Why would you run so early, they ask. No doubt they're trying to picture themselves doing it - sore and bleary eyed from bed, caffeine addiction calling them to the coffee maker before anything else can be accomplished. Two reasons really:

1) If I habitually do it first thing in the morning, I don't have the whole day to think up excuses to not do it in the evening.

2) In the summer it's not stinking hot yet.

I've run in the heat. High summer at noon when it's above 30 degrees (that's 84F to you Yankees) is not pleasant to me. Red hair, pale skin, freckles and a (former) BMI of 33 meant that the sun was not my friend. I've gotten heat stroke once or twice in my life and it's not something I'd care to repeat. I took the basement bedroom in my house (rather then the master bedroom) specifically so that I could stay cool during the summer.

So, yeah, first thing in the morning, when it's still cool enough for me to function. Even at that time of the morning it will be pushing temps too high for me to run during July and August.

The last two years were heaven to me - cool and damp. As long as it wasn't pouring rain it was ideal running weather.

Of course, my surface area to mass ratio has increased, so maybe I can shed heat a little quicker this year. We'll see.

Thank you, sir. I do indeed feel special now. I too like those early morning hours.

May you not be troubled by this summer's heat. That would be yet another nice bonus to the efforts you've made to take better care of yourself.
