Friday, May 21, 2004: Uncle Travellin' Matt, aka ME.

Slept like the dead last night, falling asleep around midnight and waking up around eleven. Chris and Athena have a couch that ultra comfy for sleeping in. Plus I several weeks of six-hours-of-sleep-per-night finally caught up to me.

I didn't really have time to do anything else so the three of us went to Memphis Blues for lunch and then I went to the train station. This was relatively harmless and the ride out to Chilliwack was, aside from traffic, pretty uneventful.

Got a hotel room at the Comfort Inn which alleged to be just down the road from Chilliwack Heritage Park - the road being Lickacock way. I was trapped in the ugly zone of having too much time on my hands, but not enough to really do anything useful. The hotel porn cost $15 so I opted to take a walk to CHP just to check things out.

Lickacock Way is one of Chilliwack's major roads, and on one end of it is my hotel and several major shopping malls (making Chilliwack look just like some of the outlying 'burbs of Cowtown, except that the place reeks of trees and the horizon is 10K away and up rather than over the curve of the planet and down). On the other end is CHP.

Between them is 2.5K of farmland and no sidewalks.

So I had a fairly crappy walk along the shoulder of a highway. When I got to CHP I discovered a long lineup of SCAdians trying to get through the gate with their cars. No familiar faces (except for the Viking married to the Ballet Dancer) so I went into the main building which turns out to be the biggest barn I've ever seen. You could assemble a Saturn 5 in this barn, it's that bag. "Sorry", says the SCAdian I meet, "but there is no gate here for foot traffic, you have to go back to where the cars are gating in."

So I do this, which also allows me to cut in line. I pay my site fee and, seeing that nothing is actually happening, I leave. 2.5K of farmland and no sidewalks, but now I'm on the other shoulder because my Daddy always said, walk on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic so you don't get nailed from behind.
