Silverwolf
I was hemming and hawing about going to Silverwolf this weekend. I'm glad I went, and not just because I shot really well.
Notably, the event was free! This is one of those fantastic ideas that I wish Montengarde had had first, but Borealis managed to pull it off. Being completely unable to read eventcopy, I was unaware of the lack of cost and it didn't factor into my decision to go.
The one thing holding me back was the fact that it's a three hour drive and I really didn't want to do that by myself twice in one day. If I went, I'd have to camp overnight and that wasn't really blowing my kilt up. Ultimately, the prospect of spending some quality campfire time with friends I'd like to chat more with did it.
I was about an hour late getting out of the city, but ended up having a pleasant drive up to Warburg where the event was held. For the last quarter or the trip I took the secondary highways, which I might do more of in the future - unlike highway 2, I was the only one on the road!
I got to the site and quickly changed into garb and put on twice as much sun screen as I thought I needed (I burned at the last two events). Then it was off to the range to shoot. Sadly my tardiness meant I couldn't watch the heavy or rapier tournament.
Have I mentioned how important the Avacal archery community is to me? I love the comradery of it. I hope the other SCAdian martial arts have something similar.
We started the tournament and, on the first target, my attitude spun 180°, then 180° again.
What happened is, on the first target, I started out feeling confident, then it all went to shit when three of my six arrows missed the target butt completely.
Basically, ever since I busted my shoulder last summer, I've been flinching my left arm on release. this generaly deflects the arrow to the right. Recently we identified this as the problem (It takes someone else to watch me shoot to notice it - I was never going to notice it by myself). Of course now I occasionally I have the opposite problem - I overcompensate and deflect the arrow left. Ugh. When I manage to do everything right I approach the way I shot a couple years ago.
Anyway, I deflected my first two arrows right, curse myself, overcompensate and miss to the left. Fuck. At this point I'm thinking "Well you've lost this tournament dumbass".
Then I shot the "foe" part of the target twice. My final arrow I end up shooting the highest point part of the target - the noose holding the "friend". Now I wasn't aiming there, but I'll happily take five points.

That was when I realize that Their Majesties
vikvikingsson and
ya_inga were watching me! "That was some really good shooting" they said. And suddenly I didn't care about those three arrows that missed anymore. For the rest of the shoot I was the cock of the walk! I ened up with 19 points (second place overall was Baeldric with 14, who is now the new Borealis archery champion). The difference between first (19) and second (14)? That would be the five points I got for shooting the noose. But that's not why it was important. It's important because I would have shot worse overall without that boost of confidence.
So I was pretty pleased with myself for the rest of the day.
Next up was securing a feast ticket (It might have been free, but it wasn't unlimited. I was on the waiting list). Then setting up my camp. My new 1-2 day camp is almost perfect. I have a new double-high air mattress that's a single and just tall enough for me. Unfortunately I bought the single out of recognition that I'm probably never having sex again at an SCA event. On the brightside, the death of hope means I don't have to be disappointed so often, which tends to throw me into a depression.
The feast was fucking awesome, if a little late in the latter removes.
Court was good, several people got highly deserving awards, and we got to see the new champions step up: Baeldric for archery, Fenrick for armoured, Genic for rapier. The other champions I don't know.
snooness got her Goutte de Sang, making her a Ladyship^2. Congrats again!
And me? I got a katana which is both cool and surreal, thus making it extra cool!

TM's also addressed the issue of Borealis events being in the sticks. It's a combination of cost and a desire to hold equestrian and archery on site. It's a little weird to hear your own objections being addressed in court by the king and queen.
After court I hung out at Fenrick and Albrecht's camp. Had a nice quiet chat with
oblivions, which is always good because we both speak INTP natively. It's sometimes good to be able to chat without having to constantly translate to non-INTP.
The drinking and partying went on into the wee hours. It was fun.
This morning I got up and broke camp. A bunch of us went into Thorsby for breakfast and then it was another three hour drive back to Cowtown. I had high ambitions for the day, but my one hour nap on the couch turned into a five hour nap. I must have needed it bad.
Congrats to Ro-bear and all his volunteers for putting on the best Borealis event I've been to yet.

Or is that a raft?
Not a ladyship? - a lady-raft instead?
Ah well - two ships and not a peer to dock too.
:P
Glad you had fun.
I had to bail early since the person I was driving needed to bail out her household member whom we collectively deemed to tired to drive home safely.
I wanted to stay, and had my tent.... but got out voted. All for the better though cause I had Sunday to thesis.
Alas, and it sounded like Blue got a bit of a bardic circle going in the hall. :( :( :(
I was hoping to do some singing (re: croaking) this event, as well my instrumental music stuff.

I napped the sunday away too - I think the heat takes a lot out of a person - especailly when we are so unaccustomed to it ; )
